Police Brutality
Michigan, like most states, has licensing boards for nurses and other medical personnel, teachers, accountants and other professions. For over 20 years, we have represented teachers, nurses and other licensed professionals. We can defend your rights before the state boards.
Civil Rights
The Civil Rights Movement won protections against discrimination in education, employment, housing, voting and services in the 1960s. Like the rights of labor, these rights have been under sustained attack in recent years. We have led some of the major fights against those attacks. We proved that the University of Michigan racially discriminated against black workers and won the largest verdict for racial discrimination in the history of Washtenaw County. We also won large verdicts and settlements for persons discharged or otherwise victimized due to their age, gender, religion, political beliefs, or disability. Read More…
Family Law
We strive to minimize the emotional stress and financial burden that often accompanies divorce, child custody disputes, parenting time issues and other domestic relations problems. Our firm’s highest priority is to obtain an outcome that provides our clients and their children with a viable future. The firm’s primary family law attorney has over 35 years of experience standing up for battered and abused women, mothers and fathers seeking greater involvement in their children’s lives, and teenagers who want to be able to make their own lawful decisions without parental coercion or interference. Whether you are just exploring your options or engaged in protracted battle with your current spouse, former spouse, or your child’s other parent, we are here to competently and compassionately assist you.
Criminal Defense
The firm has won acquittals for criminal defendants wrongfully accused of murder, armed robbery, criminal sexual conduct, and other serious felonies. We have successfully defended individuals ranging from striking workers arrested on the picket line to women defending themselves against domestic violence.
Labor Rights
The labor movement won protection for the right to form, join and assist unions and to bargain with management in the 1930s. In the 1960s, Michigan extended those rights to public employees. But in recent years, those rights, like so many others, have been under sustained attack.
In Detroit, Flint and throughout southeastern Michigan, the firm represents AFSCME, Teamster and UAW locals, independent unions and individual workers. We won over $4,000,000 in back pay for one local and have won numerous arbitrations, unfair labor practice charges and court actions. The firm has also represented teachers in tenure and other proceedings and nurses in licensing proceedings. We won an injunction that stopped the firing of two teacher activists and then won $300,000 to compensate them for their mental pain and suffering, even though they had not lost a single day’s pay [LINK 5].
Employment Rights
We represent individual who have been discharged or discriminated against at all levels of employment. We have won cases for whistleblowers, for persons who have been denied their rights under the Family Medical Leave Act, for persons who have been wrongfully discharged, and for countless victims of race, national origin, age, gender, and religious discrimination (See Civil Rights). We won four million dollars for sales persons who had been denied commissions. We won thousands of dollars for widows who were wrongfully denied their husband’s full surviving spouse pension benefits. Read More…
